Ah, it's nice to be posting over here again!
First of all, if any of you are in Houston and want to see a match or so, check out the Texas Tornados website. That is who is hosting the big tournament in April. Their facility is in northwest Houston.
For this weekend, the tourny is in Arizona. Where - I'm not sure but if any of my astute readers know, leave a comment. I'll email Coach with the where/when today.
Next - part of my quest in being a good volleyball fan is to learn as much as I can about the game. I've gotten a lot of great links from folks but, let's face it - unless you know the basics, reading some of the resources is like attempting to digest a 4th year bio-chemistry book.
I did a quick search last night and came up with a fabulous resource - About.com's Volleyball section. Yep - that's where I'll be spending a bit of my time.
That's it for today - comments are ALWAYS welcome. And please, let me know who you are!

A look inside Spring Ball
Fans get all excited about spring volleyball but most coaches wish you would go away for many reasons. Some programs won't even announce their spring plans. With many schools everything is behind closed doors. As for the Arizona get together all they have released is a date, no teams or times and don't expect scores unless one of them does a release, same for Texas Tornados so only an insider would know all the facts right now.In spring ball rules are set between coaches except the ones that pertain to the game, everything is run like a practice unless it's an open event for a paying public.Times teams and dates can change quickly. It's not about winning but more about evaluation. There can be many time outs that seem to last forever. They might only play 2 games not even to 30.Spring ball is very loosely run.
The roster in spring ball in many cases won't be the same team in the fall.New players haven't arrived and all returning players may not be there or even play.Last year the Texas team the Aggies played in spring was a much different line up in the fall.
In spring ball seniors like Choi,Bordan and Allen can still play in spring ball but will be gone in the fall although I have no idea if Jordan has any plans for using them. Hawaii in a recent spring match used two players from last years team who won't be there in the fall and four starters didn't play.
Many times in spring ball players who are recovering from off season operations or playing in another sport may not be there.Unless you are at a spring match the score you hear or see in most cases won't be a true reflection of how good or how bad your team was. This is one of the biggest reasons why some coaches don't want fans involved with spring ball.I once seen a top 25 team lose to DII teams in spring then go 30-1 in the regular season beating as many as 8 top 25 teams in the process.
Spring ball is about waking up the players and getting them back in the mood, don't think for one minute that all of them are looking forward to twice a day practice, weight training etc. Also this is when coaches evaluated in many areas.
Spring ball can be fun for the die hard fan who needs a off season volleyball fix but don't put a lot into the results in spring ball.Scores can be deceving.Enjoy spring ball but don't go overboard with it,the real season is still down the road a ways
