I posted too soon!
Sun News reported this morning that our transfer setter is Alyssa Gintant. She's a 5-10 sophomore from Iowa State.
I wanted to bring up the comment in the post below this one. Here's more info on her: (Thanks to the anonymous poster!)
In two years she has only played in 6 matches and has very litle playing minutes. In the sport she is what we call a scout player or pratice team player. She has no real accompilshments in the sport such as conference awards and nothing impressive in her prep years. She will add depth to the postion but the quality of her contribution to the team is something that we will need to wait and see. She could end up being nothing more than another body

I'm going to disagree with the poster. We've seen what can happen when a player comes in to our program who's been either ignored by scouts or their current coaches. Case in Point: Alice Borden. :)
We shall see what happens.

In other news, Maria Roth says that they will be putting in a bid to host the 2007 WAC Tourny at the Pan Am. It's been in Reno for - forever. I'm sure the warmer playing weather will be a nice feature for the teams!

The key quest is "why?". The Sun-News article only mentioned Angelle Guerre, not Jessee Ericson. I think there is more to the story, i.e. Ericson's not panning out at the D1 level or not fit/aggressive enough for Mike or getting homesick for Austin, or either Ericson or Guerre are injured, not making good enough grades, or maybe not coming back next year. Something drove Mike to finding a 3rd setter, something I haven't seen for at least 4 years.
I agree with you aggiedog.Having three setters on the roster just dosen't make sense, unless he has plans to covert one of them to another position.Ericson got rave reviews from prepvolleyball.com as a sophmore in high school but after that not much was heard about her.I read recently that she and Hawaii's Nicki Thomas are tight, both were HS teamates in high school and trained together in Texas last summer.
I think it may have more to do with filling Jackie's shoes quickly rather than waiting to see if Angelle or Jessee can do it. Jessee saw no action last year (I believe) and Angelle saw very limited action. If there's someone who can come in and take over the position right out, I think its a great move.
ALTHO...if Jessee is having problems/homesick/etc, then its a different story altogether.
But wouldn't you expect Mike to bring in a setter with experience? I can see bringing in a starting setter from a top team. Or even a setter with some playing time at another good program. Alyssa saw the bench at Iowa State just as much as Angelle and Jessee did here. At least Angelle and Jesee knows the style of our players. Alyssa will have to learn Mike's system.
Jessee was red-shirted all season, along with three other freshmen. She didn't even have a numbered uniform for home games, just a t-shirt and Aggie warmups.
Personally, I had expected her to start next year, not Angelle. Something just seems fishy here, bringing in a 3rd setter. I can't imagine Mike's system is that hard to learn, especially for a player with Jessee's experience. You know Mike expects the setter to run the team and be aggressive at the net. I'd like to think that maybe Jessee's just not being confident and stepping up, but that would be fixable by practice. To me, bringing in a 3rd setter says that something's not right with either Jessee or Angelle.
There is another scenario ... In practice, Angelle sees that Jessee is going to be the starter. Angelle is looking for a place where she can be the starter, so Mike is filling in with a backup.
All great points. I guess we'll see the end result when the roster is published.
Schedule should be out in a few weeks I believe.
Nice blog Mel! :) Cool that the Ag's are bidding for the VB tourney.
