Let the Rio Grande Rivalry Begin!
For those readers who don't know about this, it's a 'contest' of sorts between NMSU and UNM. Each athletic event has points each school can win. You can read more about it here.
Tonight's match up between NMSU and UNM is worth 1.5 points. (Should be worth more, but that's just me.)
So, what about tonight?
The Lady Lobos are off to a great start. They're currently 7-0 under new head coach Jeff Nelson. Last year, the Lobos went 10-20. How good is Coach Nelson? When he was at Texas Tech, he took that team to the NCAA tournament 5 times. Yeah. He's good.
What to look for tonight:
UNM's Jeanne Fairchild (#10/Jr/OH)is the kill leader for the team.
For NMSU: Coach Jordan has been going back and forth between the 5-1 and the 6-2 defense. You can get a better idea of the two by heading over to Wikipedia. Last year, he ran a 5-1.
This will be the first Aggie Vision event for volleyball.
Coming up - the team has no breaks at all. After tonight, they head off to Nebraska for the Ameritas Players Challenge in Lincoln. Friday at 3:30pm, the team takes on Louisville (play by play on AM 570). Depending on the outcome of that game, they'll take on either Duke or Nebraska on Saturday. Again, play by play on AM 570, game time is TBA.

Just wanted to make a quick note on your blog regarding the 5-1 v. the 6-2. A 5-1 is the most seen offensive scheme in volleyball where you see a 5 hitters (2 outside/left side hitters; 2 middle hitters; 1 opposite/right side hitter).
However a “true” 6-2 offense consists of no substitutions and both setters are also considered opposite hitters. This is the style Cuba used as international rules limit liberal substitutions like the college game. In international volleyball, a player can be subbed in once and then removed for the original player. If that subbed player is put back in the game, that player is then “locked” into that position and the original player can no longer re-enter until the next game. In college volleyball, coaches can sub in players as many times as they want as long as they don’t go over their substitution limit.
With the liberal substitutions and variations to the international rules, Jordan (and other coaches) run a modified version of the 6-2 by replacing the front row setter with an opposite and the back row opposite with a setter, keeping 3 front row hitting options at all times.
