NMSU Volleyball Wins Four in a Row to Start Season

LAS CRUCES, N.M.-The New Mexico State volleyball team (4-0) was led by sophomore Kelli Goodan to sweep Texas Southern (0-5) in three games by scores of 30-11, 30-17 and 30-14 at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, N.M. on Aug. 26.

Goodan (Des Moines, N.M.) led all players with 11 kills and hit .529 in the home opener. She also had one dig and one block assist.

Head coach Michael Jordan was pleased with how Goodan and other young players did in the match against Texas Southern.

“She played well,” Jordan said. “She tried to do a little too much early but then she settled in and played well.”

Freshman Whitney Phillips also did very well as she had nine kills on 12 attempts to hit .667 on the night. She also had four service aces, but that did not top freshman Brynja Rodgers (Iowa City, Iowa) who had five aces. Rodgers also led all players with 21 assists on the night.

“We did have good legs (tonight) considering we woke up at 4:30 this morning and played all weekend,” Jordan said. “Playing your first home match gives a lot of adrenaline and we played a lot of fresh legs from kids we who didn’t play so much this weekend.”

Freshman Alex Steinmetz (Las Cruces, Las Cruces HS) also saw plenty of playing time and picked up eight kills and two digs.

The Aggie volleyball team will head to Houston for a tournament there on Saturday, Sept. 1 and Sunday, Sept. 2. They will take on No. 4 Texas in the first match at 4:30 p.m. (MDT) and round out the weekend against Houston on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. (MDT).
